mestizo
Blended ancestry term
Mestizo refers to a person of mixed European and Indigenous American ancestry, particularly in Latin America.
The term originated during Spanish colonization to categorize people in the racial hierarchy, ranking below those of pure European descent.
Today it remains common in Latin American countries as both demographic category and cultural identity: Mexico's population is predominantly mestizo.
The word carries different connotations depending on context—neutral census terminology in some countries, contested colonial legacy in others.
