haciendas
Latin American estates
Haciendas is the plural of hacienda, a large estate or plantation, especially in Spanish-speaking regions of the Americas.
The term evokes colonial-era agricultural operations worked by indigenous laborers or slaves.
Today hacienda often describes the main house of such an estate, or any grand Spanish-style residence: They converted the old hacienda into a boutique hotel.
