arepas
Venezuelan stuffed cakes
Arepas is the plural of arepa, a flatbread made from ground maize dough, central to Venezuelan and Colombian cuisine.
The thick, round cakes are grilled, baked, or fried, then often split and stuffed with cheese, meat, beans, or other fillings: We grabbed arepas from a food truck for lunch.
They function as both bread and vessel, similar to how pita or tortillas are used elsewhere.
