pampas

South American plains

Pampas are the vast, treeless grasslands of South America, especially in Argentina and Uruguay.

The word is Spanish, borrowed from Quechua.

In English, pampas usually appears with the definite article: gauchos riding across the pampas.

Pampas grass is a tall ornamental plant with feathery plumes, native to these plains but now common in landscaping worldwide.
