negro

Black in Madrid

Negro is a now-obsolete term for a Black person, once standard in American English through the mid-20th century.

The Negro spiritual tradition, Negro leagues.

The word fell from use as Black Americans asserted control over their own naming, and today it sounds archaic at best, offensive at worst.

It persists in historical contexts and some organization names established before the shift: the United Negro College Fund.
