Screw head recess

A countersink is a conical hole cut into material so that a screw or bolt head sits flush with or below the surface.

The tool that cuts such holes is also called a countersink.

As a verb, to countersink is to create this recess or to drive a fastener into one: Countersink the screws so the surface is smooth.
