countersinking

Beveling screw holes

Countersinking is the process of cutting a cone-shaped recess into a surface so that a screw or bolt head sits flush with or below the surface rather than protruding.

The term applies to both the action and the resulting cavity: The carpenter finished countersinking the screws before sanding.

A countersink is also the specialized bit used for this purpose.
