deburring

Removing metal fragments

Deburring is removing rough edges or ridges left on metal, plastic, or other materials after cutting, drilling, or machining.

Burrs are tiny protrusions that can cause injury, interfere with assembly, or mar appearance.

The process may be done by hand with files or specialized tools, or by tumbling parts in abrasive media: The machinist spent an hour deburring the aluminum brackets.
