pilot-hole

Screw's advance path

A pilot hole is a small hole drilled before inserting a screw or driving a larger drill bit.

The preliminary hole guides the fastener, prevents splitting in wood, and reduces resistance: Always drill a pilot hole when working near the edge of a board.

The term applies literally in construction and woodworking, occasionally extending to preparatory steps in other contexts.
