pilot hole

Screw's advance path

A pilot hole is a small hole drilled before inserting a screw or driving a larger drill bit.

The preliminary hole guides the fastener and prevents the material—especially wood—from splitting: Always drill a pilot hole when working near the edge of a board.

The diameter is typically smaller than the screw's threads.
