fabrication

Made-up tale

Fabrication is something made up—an invention or lie presented as truth: His alibi turned out to be a complete fabrication.

The word also means the act of constructing or manufacturing something, especially from components: metal fabrication, the fabrication of circuit boards.

Both senses share the idea of making something that didn't exist before.
