joinery

Craft of connections

Joinery is the craft of connecting pieces of wood without nails or screws, using interlocking cuts like dovetails, mortises, and tenons.

The term also covers the work joiners produce—doors, window frames, staircases, and fitted furniture.

In British usage, joinery often distinguishes finer interior woodwork from rougher carpentry: The joinery in Victorian houses was remarkably precise.
