naval escort
Convoy protection vessel
A naval escort is a warship assigned to protect other vessels—merchant ships, troop transports, or supply convoys—from enemy attack.
The term gained particular currency during the World Wars, when escort destroyers and corvettes guarded Atlantic convoys against submarine threats: The convoy sailed with a naval escort of four destroyers.
