Dense coconut treat
A macaroon is a small cookie made primarily from coconut or almond paste, egg whites, and sugar.
The coconut version—dense, mounded, often dipped in chocolate—dominates American bakeries.
Almond macaroons are closer to the original and remain common in Italian and Jewish cuisines.
Not to be confused with the French macaron, a delicate sandwich cookie made from almond flour with a filling between two meringue shells.
