prune

Cut back branches

Prune has two distinct meanings.

As a noun, a prune is a dried plum, wrinkled and dark, eaten as a snack or used in cooking.

The wrinkled appearance gives rise to informal use describing elderly or shriveled-looking people or skin: My fingers are all pruney from the bath.

The verb prune means to trim branches or foliage from a plant to encourage healthy growth or shape it.

This extends figuratively to cutting away unnecessary parts of anything: We need to prune the budget or prune redundant staff.
