embryo
Precursor to fetus
An embryo is an organism in its earliest stage of development, before it has taken recognizable form.
In humans, the term applies from fertilization through about eight weeks, after which it becomes a fetus.
The word extends to anything in an undeveloped state: The plan was still in embryo.
Embryonic means rudimentary or just beginning: an embryonic democracy.
