chariot

Ancient battle cart

A chariot is a two-wheeled horse-drawn vehicle used in ancient warfare and racing.

The driver stood upright, pulled by one or more horses at high speed.

Chariots appear throughout ancient history—Egyptian, Greek, Roman—and figure prominently in mythology and religious texts: Elijah ascended to heaven in a chariot of fire.

The word now evokes antiquity or poetic grandeur.
