contest

Vie for supremacy

A contest is a competition in which participants vie against each other to win a prize or determine superiority: a beauty contest, a writing contest.

The word works as both noun and verb, with stress shifting accordingly—CONtest for the noun, conTEST for the verb.

To contest something is to challenge or dispute it: She plans to contest the will.

A contested election is one where the outcome is disputed or closely fought.

Something uncontested faces no opposition or challenge.
