Indra

Heaven's Vedic ruler

Indra is the king of the gods in Hindu mythology, ruler of the heavens and god of thunder, lightning, and rain.

He wields the thunderbolt (vajra) and rides a white elephant.

In the Vedas, Indra is the most frequently invoked deity, a warrior god who slays demons and releases life-giving waters.

His prominence diminished in later Hinduism as Vishnu and Shiva rose to supremacy, but he remains important in Buddhist and Jain cosmology as a celestial guardian.
