hippodrome

Ancient racing oval

A hippodrome was an ancient Greek or Roman stadium for horse and chariot racing—the word combines Greek roots meaning horse and racecourse.

The term was later adopted for theaters and entertainment venues, particularly in the 19th and early 20th centuries: The Hippodrome hosted vaudeville acts and circuses.

Some modern arenas retain the name.
