cannoneer

Big gun operator

A cannoneer is a soldier who operates a cannon—loading, aiming, and firing artillery.

The term is largely historical, belonging to the era of muzzle-loaded guns on battlefields and warships: The cannoneers scrambled to reload between volleys.

Modern equivalents are usually called artillerymen or gunners.
