pikeman
Long spear infantry
A pikeman is a soldier armed with a pike—a long wooden spear used in infantry formations, especially in European warfare from the 15th through 17th centuries.
Pikemen formed dense squares or blocks, their weapons bristling outward to repel cavalry charges: The pikemen held the center while musketeers fired from the flanks.
