lashing

Whip stroke punishment

Lashing has two main senses.

One involves striking repeatedly with a whip or similar instrument, or with words: The senator gave his opponents a verbal lashing.

Rain or waves lash against surfaces.

The other sense is rope or cord used to bind things together, or the act of securing them: Check the lashings on the cargo before we sail.
