bowsprits

Forward-projecting ship spars

Bowsprits is the plural of bowsprit, a spar extending forward from a sailing vessel's bow.

The bowsprit supports rigging for the forestays and jibs, allowing more sail area to be set forward of the hull.

On large ships, the bowsprit might extend twenty feet or more beyond the bow.
