syncline
Downward geological fold
A syncline is a trough-shaped fold in rock layers, where the strata dip inward from both sides toward a central axis.
The youngest rocks appear at the center, the oldest at the edges.
Synclines form through compressive forces in the Earth's crust and often alternate with anticlines (upward arching folds): The valley follows an eroded syncline.
