runoff

Water seeking gutters

Runoff is water that flows over land rather than soaking in—rain draining from fields, streets, or rooftops into streams and storm drains: Agricultural runoff carries fertilizers into the bay.

The word also names a second election held when no candidate wins a required majority in the first round: The two top vote-getters will face each other in a runoff.
