Amazon basin
South American jungle
The Amazon basin is the drainage area of the Amazon River in South America—the land from which water flows into the river and its tributaries.
Covering roughly 2.7 million square miles across nine countries, it contains the world's largest tropical rainforest and holds about one-fifth of Earth's fresh river water.
Deforestation in the Amazon basin has accelerated in recent decades.
