Vanity is excessive pride in one's appearance, abilities, or accomplishments—an inflated sense of self-worth that others find tiresome: His vanity wouldn't let him admit the mistake.
The word also names things associated with self-regard: a vanity is a dressing table with a mirror, and a vanity plate is a personalized license plate.
A vanity project is self-indulgent work, often financed by the creator.
In older usage, vanity meant emptiness or futility: Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.
