basins

Depressions holding water

Basins is the plural of basin, a wide shallow container for holding liquid—a sink basin, a mixing basin.

The word extends to natural depressions that collect water: river basins, drainage basins, the Great Basin of the American West.

Ocean basins are the vast depressions holding seawater.

A basin can also be a sheltered area of water for mooring boats: yacht basins along the coast.
