cistern
Rainwater storage vessel
A cistern is a tank for storing water, typically rainwater collected from roofs.
Unlike wells, which tap groundwater, cisterns hold water supplied from elsewhere.
The word appears in older buildings and rural areas where municipal water wasn't available: The old farmhouse still had its brick cistern out back.
Toilet tanks are sometimes called cisterns, especially in British English.
