Hindu holy city
Varanasi is a city in northern India on the Ganges River, considered one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities and among the holiest sites in Hinduism.
Pilgrims come to bathe in the sacred river and cremate their dead along its ghats (stepped riverbanks).
The city is also called Benares or Kashi: We watched the evening prayer ceremony on the ghats of Varanasi.
