Suez Crisis
1956 canal war
The Suez Crisis was a 1956 conflict in which Britain, France, and Israel invaded Egypt after President Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal.
American and Soviet pressure forced a withdrawal, marking the decline of British and French colonial power and the rise of American influence in the Middle East.
The term now sometimes describes any diplomatic debacle revealing a nation's diminished standing.
