Afrikaners

South African ethnic group

Afrikaners are white South Africans descended primarily from Dutch, German, and French Huguenot settlers who arrived in the Cape region beginning in the 17th century.

They speak Afrikaans, a language derived from Dutch, and historically maintained a distinct cultural identity centered on Calvinist religious traditions and agricultural life.

The term carries significant historical weight due to Afrikaners' role in establishing and maintaining apartheid, the system of racial segregation that governed South Africa until 1994.
