hard labor

Punitive physical toil

Hard labor is a form of criminal punishment requiring strenuous physical work—breaking rocks, building roads, or similar tasks.

Once standard in prisons worldwide, it has largely been abolished or softened into less brutal forms of mandatory work.

The phrase sometimes appears figuratively for any exhausting physical effort: Moving all those boxes felt like hard labor.
