DVD-ROM

Read-only optical disc

DVD-ROM is a DVD format designed for data storage rather than video playback, functioning as the high-capacity successor to CD-ROM.

Like CD-ROMs, DVD-ROMs are read-only—the data is pressed into the disc at manufacture and cannot be altered.

The format was standard for distributing software, games, and reference materials before digital downloads became dominant.
