emulation
Striving to match
Emulation is the effort to match or surpass someone or something, usually through imitation of their qualities or achievements.
A young athlete might study a champion's technique in emulation of their success.
In computing, emulation refers to software or hardware that mimics another system, allowing programs designed for one platform to run on a different one: I use an emulator to play old Nintendo games on my laptop.
The verb emulate captures both senses—striving to equal and technically replicating.
