whiskey

Grain mash liquor

Whiskey is a distilled alcoholic spirit made from fermented grain mash—typically barley, corn, rye, or wheat—and aged in wooden barrels.

The spelling whiskey is standard in Ireland and the United States, while whisky (without the e) is used in Scotland, Canada, and Japan.

Bourbon, Scotch, and rye are all types of whiskey distinguished by grain composition and origin: a glass of whiskey, Irish whiskey, Tennessee whiskey.
