whiskey barrel
Bourbon aging vessel
A whiskey barrel is a wooden cask used for aging whiskey, traditionally made of charred American white oak.
The charring caramelizes wood sugars and helps filter impurities, imparting distinctive vanilla, caramel, and smoky notes to the spirit.
Bourbon must by law be aged in new charred oak barrels, while Scotch producers often reuse bourbon barrels.
After whiskey aging, barrels find second lives maturing beer, wine, or maple syrup: The stout was aged in whiskey barrels for six months.
