valency

Atomic bonding power

Valency is the capacity of an atom to combine with other atoms, measured by the number of chemical bonds it can form.

Carbon has a valency of four; hydrogen has a valency of one.

The term extends to linguistics, where it describes how many arguments a verb requires: "give" has a valency of three (giver, recipient, thing given).

Also spelled valence, especially in American English.
