subcategorization

Verbs selecting arguments

Subcategorization is a linguistics term for how verbs select the grammatical structures that accompany them.

Some verbs require a direct object (She hit the ball), others take a clause (He thinks that she's right), and some need no complement at all (The baby slept).

These requirements are the verb's subcategorization frame—its grammatical appetite.
