molecular weight

Substance's atomic sum

Molecular weight is the mass of a molecule, calculated by adding up the atomic weights of all its atoms.

Water has a molecular weight of about 18—two hydrogens at 1 each, plus oxygen at 16.

The term is used interchangeably with molecular mass, though technically weight implies a force while mass does not.

Molecular weight determines many physical properties: substances with higher molecular weights generally have higher boiling points.
