hydrogen bond

Water's cohesive force

A hydrogen bond is a weak attraction between a hydrogen atom bonded to an electronegative atom (like oxygen or nitrogen) and another electronegative atom nearby.

Though individually weak, hydrogen bonds collectively produce significant effects: they give water its unusual properties, hold DNA's double helix together, and shape protein structures.

Hydrogen bonds between water molecules explain why ice floats.

The term also functions as a verb: molecules can hydrogen bond to each other.
