pronouns

They replace nouns

Pronouns are words that stand in for nouns—I, you, he, she, it, we, they, and others.

They prevent repetition: instead of Sarah said Sarah would bring Sarah's car, we say Sarah said she would bring her car.

Different forms mark grammatical role: subject (I, he, they), object (me, him, them), possessive (my, his, their).

In recent usage, pronouns often refers specifically to the set someone uses for themselves: What are your pronouns?

This reflects growing attention to gender identity, where individuals may prefer they/them, she/her, he/him, or neopronouns like ze/zir.
