give-and-take
Reciprocal exchange process
Give-and-take is mutual exchange or compromise—each side yields something and receives something.
In negotiation, give-and-take produces agreements neither party would design alone: After some give-and-take, we settled on a price.
The term also describes lively back-and-forth conversation or debate: I enjoy the give-and-take of a good argument.
