covalence
Shared electron bonding
Covalence is the chemical bonding that occurs when atoms share electrons rather than transferring them.
In a covalent bond, two atoms each contribute electrons to a shared pair, holding the atoms together.
Most organic molecules—proteins, sugars, DNA—are held together by covalent bonds.
The term also refers to the number of electron pairs an atom can share: carbon has a covalence of four.
