trade in
Old for new
To trade in something is to exchange it as partial payment toward a new purchase: I traded in my old car for a newer model.
A trade-in is the item exchanged or the transaction itself: They offered three thousand for the trade-in.
To trade in something can also mean to deal in it commercially: a firm that trades in rare books.
