blockade
Seal off access
A blockade is a military or political measure that seals off a place to prevent goods or people from entering or leaving.
Naval blockades cut off ports; a blockade can also surround a city or border.
The verb means to impose such a barrier: Enemy ships blockaded the harbor.
Extended uses describe any obstruction that prevents movement or progress: a blockade of protesters, an emotional blockade.
