pallium

Ancient woolen cloak

A pallium is a woolen vestment worn by the Pope and conferred upon metropolitan archbishops as a symbol of their authority and communion with Rome—a narrow band draped over the shoulders with hanging strips front and back.

In anatomy, pallium refers to the cerebral cortex or its evolutionary precursors in vertebrate brains.

The word also describes a mantle or cloak more generally, and in zoology, the mantle of a mollusk.
