Mufti has two unrelated meanings.

A mufti is an Islamic legal expert qualified to issue rulings on religious matters.

Separately, mufti means civilian clothes worn by someone who normally wears a uniform: The officer was in mufti.

This sense originated in British military slang, possibly from the robes worn by muftis.
