A girdle is a band or belt worn around the waist, or more commonly, a woman's elasticized undergarment designed to shape the waist and hips.
The word extends to anything that encircles: a girdle of trees surrounded the meadow.
To girdle something is to encircle it.
To girdle a tree is to cut through the bark all the way around, which kills it by stopping nutrient flow.
